Dentist in Dunfermline: plenty of practices, few NHS places for adults

Dunfermline has more dental practices than anywhere else in Fife, and most of them are taking new patients in some form. The catch is the kind of patient. If you're an adult looking for NHS care, the choice shrinks quickly, and a directory listing won't tell you where you stand. Here's what we found across the 14 practices we track in and around the town.

How many Dunfermline dentists are taking new patients?

When we last checked, 12 of the 14 practices were taking new patients of some kind. Only five of them offered an adult an NHS place. Most of the rest were taking private patients, and three also registered children on the NHS, usually only when a parent joined privately.

Dunfermline: practices we track Number
Taking private & NHS patients of all ages 4
Taking private, & NHS for under-18s only 3
Taking private patients only 4
Taking NHS patients only 1
Not taking new patients 2
Total practices tracked 14
Bar chart of the 14 dental practices GetMeADentist tracks in Dunfermline: taking private & nhs patients of all ages 4, taking private, & nhs for under-18s only 3, taking private patients only 4, taking nhs patients only 1, not taking new patients 2.

So 9 of the 14 have no NHS route in for an adult today, broadly the same picture we describe in Fife's Dental Deserts. NHS places that open can close again within weeks once word gets round, which is why figures like these date quickly.

These are the practices our figures cover, including Oakley on the western edge of the town. We don't publish which individual practices are taking patients: that changes too often to list reliably, and checking it for you is exactly what our free service does.

What private dental care costs in Dunfermline

Because so many Dunfermline practices are now private, it helps to know the going rate. Where practices shared prices with us, a new-patient examination cost between about £74 and £98, and one quoted a one-hour consultation at £90 plus X-rays if needed. Most offer a monthly plan once you're dentally fit, typically around £23 to £38 a month. Prices are the practices' own, correct when quoted to us in 2026; always confirm the fee when you book.

If you can travel a few miles

Some of the smaller West Fife communities, including Dalgety Bay and High Valleyfield, had NHS capacity for adults when we last checked, and Cowdenbeath had some too. Rosyth and Kelty didn't. Our Fife town-by-town overview has the figures for every town we cover.

Questions people ask about dentists in Dunfermline

How can I find an NHS dentist in Dunfermline?

Start with the practices that are actually registering adults, which in Dunfermline is a minority, so working down a directory mostly gets you a string of no's. NHS Fife's Dental Advice Line (01592 226555) helps unregistered patients find a practice. Or send one request through GetMeADentist and we'll contact local practices for you and pass back the ones that can help.

Can my children get an NHS dentist in Dunfermline if I go private?

Often, yes. Three of the Dunfermline practices we track register children on the NHS, and at some of them that depends on a parent or guardian joining as a private patient. NHS dental care is free for anyone under 26 in Scotland, so it's worth asking about children's NHS registration when you contact a private practice.

Is it cheaper to see an NHS dentist or go private?

NHS check-ups are free for everyone in Scotland. For NHS treatment, adults pay 80% of the cost, capped at £384 per course of treatment, and treatment is free if you're under 26, pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, or receive certain benefits. Private practices set their own fees for examinations and treatment.

Figures come from GetMeADentist's own checks of each practice, by phone, email or the practice's own website, checked between July and October 2026. Registration status changes, sometimes week to week, so treat this as a snapshot rather than a live list.
